The Republic of Azerbaijan is a state in the eastern part of Transcaucasia, the first Muslim democratic state. The capital of Azerbaijan is Baku. The city is known for its medieval old town, where the Maiden Tower is located, as well as the Shirvanshahs’ Palace, a royal residence of the XV century: Apsheron National Park, Bibi-Eibat Mosque, and the Carpet Museum, which displays Azerbaijani carpets, some of them from the 17th century, as well as weapons and faience dishes from the 12th century and other monuments.

The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani. During the 20th century, the Azerbaijani writing system changed four times. Today, Azerbaijanis use three types of writing: Arabic, Latin and Cyrillic. The Azerbaijani language is 40% Farsi and Arabic. The Azerbaijani language has no genders and pronouns – “he”, “she”, “it”, only “this” and “that”. There are only 5 tenses in this language, no prepositions and prefixes (except for borrowed words) and virtually no exceptions.
