Montenegrin is the official language in Montenegro, as well as an official regional language in Serbia. It was granted state status in 2007. It belongs to the South Slavic group of languages.
The peculiarity of the Montenegrin language is the use of two writing systems. There is a Latin alphabet (Gaevica) and a Cyrillic alphabet (Vukovica) at the same time. Nevertheless, 2/3 of the population speaks Serbo-Croatian.
In 2017, the International Organization for Standardization decided to separate Montenegrin and Serbian, which was previously considered part of Serbian. Now the language has its own ISO-CRN code.
The name of the country Montenegro originated from the combination of the words “Crna Gora”, which means “Black Mountain”.
