Estonian

The Estonian language first received official status and became the official language of Estonia in 1918 after the country gained its independence. American scholars from the U.S. Department of State’s Institute of Foreign Service classify Estonian as the most difficult language in the third group of languages in terms of difficulty of learning.

The language consists of 16 consonants and 9 vowels. The alphabet consists of 27 letters and 6 of them are combined with diacritics based on the Latin alphabet.

Estonian has the status of an official language of the EU. Today, in order to become an Estonian citizen, applicants must have a B1 level of language proficiency. The Estonian Language Institute in Tallinn regulates its use.
