Mongolian is one of the oldest languages of East Asia. Along with the migration of its people, the language has expanded its range to Russia and China. It is currently recognized as an official regional language in some regions of Russia, Kyrgyzstan and China.

The Mongolian alphabet has 35 letters, with the letters k, f, sh, and p appearing only in loanwords; v and r do not appear at the beginning of a word. The Mongolian Cyrillic alphabet is a Cyrillic-based alphabet of the Mongolian language, adopted in Mongolia since 1941.

The oldest surviving monument of Old Mongolian writing is the Genghis Stone.
