Portuguese

Portugal is a vibrant country in western Europe. The name of the country comes from the city of Porto (Latin: Portus Cale). The official and national language is Portuguese. The words “albatross”, “cobra”, “mosquito”, “zebra”, “albino”, “commander”, “banana” and many others are of Portuguese origin. In ancient times, Portugal was a colonial power. It lost its last two colonies (Macau and East Timor) only in 1999.

This factor contributed to the spread of the Portuguese language. It has become an official language of Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Equatorial Guinea (along with Spanish and French), East Timor (along with the Austronesian language Tetum), and Macau (along with Chinese). About 80% of all modern Portuguese speakers currently live in the Federative Republic of Brazil.

The standard Portuguese alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet and includes 23 letters, but there are also letters that are not considered to be independent letters. These are the letters: Á, Â, Ã, À, Ç, É, Ê, Í, Ó, Ô, Õ, Ú. In addition, there are digraphs nh, lh, ch, ss. The letters K, W, and Y are also used in words of foreign origin.

Cervantes called Portuguese a “sweet language”.
